LOT to maintain Zagreb flights

Tuesday, March 3, 2015

LOT Polish Airlines will take over EuroLOT’s daily service from Warsaw to Zagreb, once the latter suspends all operations on March 30. LOT, which will continue operating the flights with a Dash 8, will initially run the service five times per week, before increasing to daily from June 4. Tickets for the service are on sale through the airline’s website. EuroLOT will be liquidated at the end of the month after the Polish government concluded there was no prospect of profits at the airline in the foreseeable future. The carrier inaugurated daily flights to Zagreb on October 26 last year.

    I don't see a reason behind this.

Might be. I don't see how Zagreb can be profitable for an airline on the verge of bankruptcy, they should cut that route ASAP.

They are indirectly competing with Air Serbia. If they withdraw from the route, AS will kill them on BEG-WAW, it's already a financial bloodbath, like this both airlines are doing bad.

Aerologic, no need for that. Solution is for one airline to withdraw and codeshare with other. Airline with most passengers should keep the route.

Of course i wasn't implying it should be like that. It is just a constation, which, taking into account the current conjecture, might remain unchanged for an unforeseeable amount of time.

the logic in LOT has always been somewhat strange.
first, AS is not really a competitor in this case, because ZAG-BEG-WAW flights take 1 full day. there are better options via MUC or VIE.
i used to be in frontline activities for LOT in ZAG in the beginning of 2000s, when they maintained 5 times per week service WAW-ZAG-WAW. we had 2 good flights, sunday and thursday, others ranging from 20-40 pax. friday was often cancelled with 5-10 pax only. sometimes we had around 100 or even more, that would often be the sunday flight. after about 3 years they decided to cancel the ZAG office and that flight.
but at that time LOT had one service from WAW to either Canada or USA with their B767, which had loading 98%. i remember they cancelled that flight for some reason. i'm not sure if that was Toronto or some other city, but they cancelled it despite such a high load factor.

anyway, if the number of pax is in the range it was some 12 years ago when i was around (i'm thinking it must be higher now!), operating with Dash8 is economically ok. LOT used to operate with jet before, EMB145.
