Croatia and B&H top safety, Air Serbia service

EX-YU airlines rated for safety and product

Croatia Airlines and B&H Airlines have been rated as best in terms of safety in the former Yugoslavia in 2013 for a second year running while Air Serbia’s improved product saw its rating build on 2012, thus offering the best service in the former Yugoslavia, according to AirlineRatings.com which lists safety and service ratings for 425 airlines around the world. Adria, Air Serbia and Montenegro Airlines received five out of seven stars for safety. On the other hand, both the national carriers of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina received a perfect seven out of seven score for safety standards and procedures. The two airlines fared well as they both have successfully undergone an IATA Operational Safety Audit, are allowed to operate within the European Union, have no fatalities in the past ten years, are endorsed by the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and both Croatia and Bosnia received top marks (eight out of eight) on the ICAO country audit. On the other hand, Adria also possesses all of the qualities as its Croatian and Bosnian counterparts but Slovenia received a four out of eight rating on the ICAO audit. Montenegro received seven out of eight on the audit but its carrier does not have the endorsement of the FAA. Similarly, Serbia received six out of eight on the ICAO audit, while its national carrier also lacks an endorsement from the FAA.

Croatia Airlines warmly welcomed the news of its safety performance, publishing the rating on its official Facebook page. For a second year in a row, Australia’s Qantas was declared the world’s safest airline while Air New Zealand was branded as the world’s best overall airline. AirlineRatings.com is the first website to independently rate airlines on safety and onboard service product since the launch of the Skytrax website where Adria, Croatia Airlines and Air Serbia hold an average three out of five star ranking.

When it comes to service excellence, Air Serbia scored four out of five stars. It improved from three stars in 2012, therefore making it the best airline in the former Yugoslavia based on its product. However, at the same time, Montenegro Airlines was not assessed while B&H Airlines’ rating is pending. Adria and Croatia Airlines were scored out of seven starts, with both receiving four - three stars below their top ranking. Both airlines maintained the same score as in 2012.

    I don't know how relevant is their analysis, I just glanced, and to start whit, Air Serbia is rated as "regional carrier" , whilst Croatia is "full service carrier", which directly means different criteria (for product rating).
    Also, info regarding Air Serbia product is not true, e.g. for business class it says:
    * - Seat pitch of 36 inch with middle seat in each row of three kept free to create more space.
    Which was neither true for the old or is true for the new JU.
    Or for economy:
    * - Sandwichs and nonalcoholic beverages provided complimentary depending on flight time
    * - No blankets or pillows
    Yet, as I understand it it is not like that.

    I don't know for Croatia/Adria and others, but they probably made mistakes in their ratings.

    PS - EX-YU it could hardly be said that Air Serbia offers best product according to AirlineRatings, on the contrary.

      I don't think there is much competition among the onboard product between JU and the rest. Even before the Etihad deal, JU's onboard product was not terrible. The AirlineRatings thing may be odd, but nobody needs them to say the obvious.

      Admin, I think there may be a small mistake in the second to last sentence of today's article. I think it should say "stars" instead of "starts". :)

      JU's onboard product was terrible before the EY take over. The sandwhich was horrible. However OU onboard product is still terrible.

      BEG-SJJ on JU before had a variety of alcoholic and no alcoholic drinks, coffee and tea.

      SPU-FCO on OU was just dried biscuits and a glass of water.

      JU as well before the EY take over did offer blankets in economy, however it was on request and not catered 100%.

      On top of this, I dont see how QF was ranked world safest with their numerous incidents in recent years. EK and LH for example have not had any major incidents as QF has.

      Actually, I think JU did not offer blankets before, even if you asked for them. Not even in business class. Their service was really bad, especially right before the takeover.


      I do agree with EK and LH (especially LH) but I think they are taking into account that Qantas has not had a single fatal accident since 1951, that's pretty impressive in my opinion. Lufthansa's last fatal accident was in 1993.

      Yes, he made me laugh as well. The only sad thing in all that laugh is, if Air Serbia had so few flights and such safety record, Aleksandar would have probably commented it as world's top safety airline or absolute champion in the region and Europe,or the amazing achievment of Serbian airline, or something similar. And it makes me lough a little bit less

    How come Croatia Airlines got top marks when one of their Dash-8 Q400 crash landed in Zurich a few months ago? Wasn't that the airline's fault or did they attribute it to Bombardier?

      The incident is just connected with manufacturer. Official investigation concluded that Croatia Airlines maintained Q400 even better than any other European carrier.

      Well, brothers, I was just to start explaining the differneces to you, but I've just changed my mind: Instead, I'll advise just to try to find out something more about "airport zones", "severe structural damages (fuselage)", "casualties (killed and injured people), "evacuation" or "controlled disembarkation".

      After lerning something about civil aviation, maybie your lough wouldn't be so loud !

      First of all : I never mentioned Serbs. I said "people in Serbia". It has more to do with mentality than nationality.

      Second : my comment is not sarcastic, I've brrn working in airline operatons for over 15 years. Emergency landing can lead to a crash landing, but there is difference between the two.Emergency landing can be, for example, for medical emergency, or tehnical failure, as the OU case in ZRH was. After tehbical emergency, plane can fly again. After crash landing, plane is not able to fly anymore and numerous dead people are count.

    Croatia Airlines downgraded their catering due to reconstruction process. On domestic flights they serve just water and there is no full meal service on flights longer than 2 hours as before. Now they serve some traditional products of Dalmatia because they are significantly cheaper than full meals. CEO told that savings on catering also helped company to become profitable in 2013. I don't think it is good decision because passengers used to eat very nice meals on board OU.

      Interestingly enough, when Austrian Airlines re-introduced regular meals on its longer flights (I believe on those longer than 2 hours), their CEO stated that offering full meals does not cost the airline that much but it does matter for the overall travelling experience.
      Interesting how the CEO of Croatia Airlines stated the opposite, as in that it helped them reduce losses in order to reach profitability.

      In Vienna, where the base of OS is, you can choose among 5 or 6 catering suppliers. Result: low prices. In Zagreb, Zagreb Airport has monopoly on catering and they literally RIP OFF for very bad product. That is the difference. But with the new operator of the airport and new legislation, I think things are going to change very soon

      Catering is very important to an airline's overall image, and cannot contribute that much for an airline to break it or make it.
      Its rather said that Croatia airlines downgraded its catering that much to offer biscuits and water on shorter flights. It used to be quite decent before, and nowadays OU' s catering is close to nothing. Too bad for OU, hope they will change it!

    Air Serbia from 30MAR14 is adjusting operational schedules on Belgrade – Banja Luka service, which sees afternoon operation being re-timed to 3 morning and 4 evening service. ATR72 operates this route.

      These frequencies are interesting, especially that they have 4 frequencies feeding the midnight wave of departures. Does it mean that there are more passengers heading to places like Athens, Thessaloniki and Moscow than there are for western European destinations?

      The JU 101 flight feeds perfectly the western European flights but I always thought there would be more demand for these.
      Would be interesting to see how many people from Republika Srpska fly from Zagreb and to which destinations. I am sure quite a few of them used Aeroflot's flight.

      there is a lot of people from Banja Luka heading to Moscow. I have checked connections from BNX to several destination from S14 and they are pretty good. Also destinations are well advertised so I am sure there will be people going from BNX (and connecting at BEG). it was only once, but I was waiting for my connecting flight to Zurich at BEG and witnessed a pretty large group of passengers arriving from Moscow rushing to check in for BNX flight (overheard). The list of 15 destinations (currently) went up to 36 with the new schedule from S14 on certain days so I guess more choices more passengers.

      lol...same here...even prepared to pay 50-100e more per ticket just to eat a meal thats worth 6e?
      the only thing that Im ready to pay for is safety and comfort. Air Serbia and Adria are definitely the future of EXYU region. Shame that Croatia Airlines is going down...

      People who fly on legacy carriers do not pay €100 more just for the sandwich. I personally don't want to fly on Wizz Air because I like to be treated like a human being.
      The only non-legacy carrier I would go on is easyJet.

    OU je gubio novac na catering-u zbog nepovoljnih ugovora .Sta mislite koliko su placali vodu Jana ili novine EPH-u pa tako mozes da uzmes bilo koji proizvod. Na takav nacin su se novci iz drzavnog proracuna preljevali u ruke Todoricu ,Pavicu i svim poslusnicima koji su se ugradili na drzavnu sisu. Paprenjaci su odlican primjer kako je lova nestajala. Tako da izjava da se stedi novac kroz uslugu u OU slucaju drzi vodu. U OU je najveci problem bila krađa i nepotizam ostali segmenti su odrađivani na profesionalni nacin koji je zbog toga uvijek puno kostao .2013 je pokazala da uz malo stednje moze se postici profit iako ni sada nije sve idealno i na trzisnom principu .
    OU treba imati pristojnu uslugu u business class-i ali za EU letove economy nije vazan voda,sok,keks ili suhe smokve a sendvici ,vino,pivo ili nesto vise na BOB.
